Scholarships for seniors has become a popular quest for many of our elderly folks. There are many retirees today that would like to spend their time in college. There are some great programs for the elderly returning to school, however some seniors may be shocked at how much a college education costs today. There are some assistance programs that can be found to aid a retired college student in their finances.

Depending on the needs of the non-traditional student, auditing classes could be ideal. Though this is not a scholarship in a true sense of the word, auditing classes allows seniors to attend classes at a deep discount. There are many colleges that allow older adult students to audit their classes, therefore the student should inquire if this option is available at the student’s college.

Scholarships for seniors are available in many states. Recently, the federal government gave federal assistance for the purpose of scholarships for seniors. The federal aid is given as grant to assist the local communities under Act 678. Many states have set aside a portion of these funds for retirees that are interested in returning to school. Yet, not all states have set funds aside for their elderly returning to college. Seniors thinking of returning to college should inquire at their college’s financial assistance department to inquire if this scholarship is available to them. There are some states that offer a tuition waiver for their elderly citizens. Alabama is such a state that waives some of the tuition at community colleges. There are some restrictions as to where the citizen can attend and the age that is eligible.

There are also some scholarships that are offered directly from the colleges that are applicable only to seniors. Some public colleges will offer folks of a certain age a full scholarship at their college. There are quite a few colleges across the country that extend these scholarships. The best option for the senior is to inquire if this is an available scholarship at the college of their choice.

The internet also specializes in available scholarships for senior citizens. Though the senior should be cautious when searching the internet for available scholarships. There are many sites that are not reputable and information should only be given after careful consideration. An elderly student’s social security should never be given to these sites unless the student is applying for scholarships or grants directly through the federal government.

The the best solution for an a scholarship for seniors is for the student to first check with the financial aid office at the college of their choice.

I’ve included a video that gives an overview of how to get scholarships. Watch it:

It seems as though you hear about schooling for senior citizens in the news each year as someone graduates with their first ever college degree. These people should be admired for getting this type of an education at their age.

The good news is that any senior citizen can get an education. This will not only enrich their lives but help them to live longer as well. Today it is easier to do than ever before because there are online schools for senior citizens to attend, especially since most of them aren’t planning to become doctors or lawyers but to simply further their education in areas that interest them. For instance, someone who is interested in literature may go on to get their Bachelor’s of Arts in Literature. This type of an education for the elderly will allow them to have a deeper understanding of their favorite author and their life.

A lot of people may think that they would be unable to find a school for the elderly that would be affordable since they are living on a retiree’s income. Fortunately, there is academic aide available especially for the elderly. There are also a lot of colleges that will offer schooling for the elderly and thus decrease the tuition so that it will be more affordable for them. Some programs also exist that offer school grants for seniors, such as the Janet Rankin Foundation. If you live within the United States and want to attend college, then you should know that some states offer tuition waivers for seniors.

Of course, there is also online schooling for seniors, which is quite popular since even though their minds are still sharp their bodies have taken a lot of physical wear and tear throughout their lives. Now that they are able to get a desktop or a laptop computer for around $200 and DSL or WiFi are not all that expensive, they no longer have to endure the commute. Plus, with all of the online classes that are available they can get a good education online.

Scientists have really taken note that education for seniors is a good thing. This is because it keeps their brain active and stimulated, which will help them to live a longer, healthier life. Even if they are getting an education in a totally obscure subject, they are still keeping their minds fresh and active, which is what is truly important.

Seniors who dropped out of college long ago(or never attended) may be interested in options to continue their college education. There are a number of programs that allow individuals to attend college for free. Seniors should take advantage of the free programs and discounts that are offered to them. Nearly 60 percent of universities offer tuition waivers to seniors. unfortunately many seniors either don’t know about these programs or don’t take advantage of them. A recent survey of a credit bearing university showed that only 50 of all students who were registered at this university were taking advantage of the free tuition program.

Reasons for the lack of enrollment may be that many students do not know about these waiver programs. Some of the other reasons why seniors may not be enrolled in a college that offers tuition waivers is that often these programs have a number of requirements that seniors need to meet first, such as there needs to be available space in a class. The permission of the instructor may be required to enroll, or there may be possible income requirements for enrollment in the program.

Many states offer a tuition discount program even if they don’t offer a full tuition waiver. Seniors can often audit a course if they can’t get a full waiver for their tuition. Auditing a course means that a student can participate in the lectures, but do not have to take the exams. People who audit courses do not get credit for the courses that they take. This is something that some senior’s are taking advantage of, in lieu of paying tuition.

The other way seniors can take college classes is to take advantage of community colleges. They are not free, but their fees are low, and seniors will pay only about 2,500 a year. There are advantages to community colleges, because as the name implies they are located in the community, and most seniors can go to class close to where they live.
Approximately two thirds of states do have some sort of free or reduced college for seniors, however if your state does not offer a program like this, there are scholarships and grants that are available just for seniors. There are websites that specialize in helping seniors obtain scholarships and or grants. A college grant is typically money for college that does not need to be paid back, although there may be some stipulations on the money. It is certainly possible for seniors to attend college for free and a little research on the topic can help you do so.

Senior year is the absolute most exciting year of any student’s education. With so many fun and exciting activities to look forward to many students don’t want to spend time thinking about college. Deciding on a college is an exciting and stressful time, but once that decision is made it is immediately time to start thinking about paying for college. Getting a head start on finding grants and scholarships is a smart idea for a number of reasons. Being on top of the ball as a senior can help one secure thousands of dollars in scholarship money. When it comes to scholarships for seniors, there are many different opportunities out there. Taking the time to find and apply for these scholarships can make cut down on student loans and unload a burden off of the student and parents.

The first mistake that many students make is to not get out there and start looking for scholarships. Many students just settle for what is listed at the school or what they are approached with. There are many not so hidden scholarship opportunities out there waiting to be applied for. College scholarships for seniors are often thought of as being through the school or by certain clubs within the school. While these are great places to look for funding, they are not the only ones. Many businesses within the community offer different types of scholarships. Calling and asking large corporations about scholarship opportunities is a great way to find scholarship money. Most corporations have scholarship opportunities listed on their website or can be contacted through their community relations department.

Student run clubs are not the only organizations that have scholarship funds available. Many national and local organizations offer college scholarships for students. These organizations typically have the requirements listed easily through their website or local chapter. Reaching out to these organizations can help students get thousands of dollars towards their education. Note that there may be some seniors discounts available.

There are many websites on the internet that can help direct students towards scholarship opportunities. Government financial aid websites often have links to different sources of scholarships found all over the internet. These websites are great sources for finding national scholarship opportunities. Talking to a college financial aid office is another great way to gather information about scholarships that seniors may not otherwise have access to. Getting out there and asking for information is the first step to finding scholarship funds.
